Shlok


येषां न विद्या न तपो न दानं ज्ञानं न शीलं न गुणो न धर्मः |
ते मर्त्य लोके भुविभार भूता मनुष्यरूपेण मृगाश्चरन्ति ||


Translation: - Those who are not learned, are not capable of penance
and charity. Besides they neither have knowledge nor good character.
They do not possess good qualities and righteous behaviour. They, on
this Mrityuloka (Earth), are burden and live the life of animals.

           Explanation:In this world, we find two types of people: those who
             perceive life from the spiritual point of view and those who perceive life
             from the materialistic point of view. We can understand the real meaning
             of this verse if we perceive life spiritually. In our Indian culture, to take
             human birth on this earth is harder for the Devas: ‘नरत्वं दुर्लभं लोके ’.
             The soul takes birth in 84 Lakhs Yonis and after having credited so many
             good deeds, at last we take the human birth. Despite taken the human 
             birth, a person if does not get knowledge, doesn’t do good deeds and 
             always busy in doing bad deeds, is like a mere burden on this earth and
             he is called as an animal. Because,


आहार निद्रा भय मैथुनं च् सामान्यं एतत् पशुभिर्नराणाम् |
धर्मो हि तेषां अधिको विशेषो धर्मेण हीनः पशुभिः समानः ||

Despite taken the human birth the person who doesn’t get knowledge,
doesn’t do good deeds, his life is meaningless: ‘किं जीवितेन पुरुषस्य निरक्षरेण'. 
God has given the additional Quality of thinking power to 
the human beings. According to poet Bhartuhari, The Person who doesn’t
have the knowledge of literature, music and art is like an animal. Then
if we talk ‘न तपो न दानं ’, today we find that there is a less proportion of 
these virtues in the person. In our culture,some good deeds for the human
beings are shown e.g. व्रत, जप, नियम, तप, स्वाध्याय, दया, दम, दान, 
etc. In this Kaliyug, we should try to imbibe these values as far as possible. 
तपः’ means to tolerate. Today there is less Tolerance power in the person. 
The word ‘दानः’ means to help according to our capacity. In our culture, 
it is said that if anybody who comesat our home as ‘अतिथि ’, then we 
should welcome him genuinely and after then ‘किञ्चित् दत्वा विसर्जयेत’. 
Taking bath is the purity of our body, invocation of God or prayer is the 
purity of our mind and charity is the purity of our wealth. But if we help 
somebody, then we should not speak about it to others. The character ‘शीलं’ 
of a person is his true wealth forever and everywhere. The character of a 
person should be great and inspirable. A person should imbibe good virtues 
in his life. Then if we talk about ‘धर्मः’, today we find that having 
forgotten our Dharma and our culture, we are running after the western culture. 
While the western countries have started to follow our culture. Today we are 
giving more importance to the materialistic pleasure than the spiritual life. Our 
culture is the culture of Vedas, Rishis and because of that it is very honorable 
in the world. Our Vedas, Purans and Upanishads are believed as the supreme 
goal of the mankind by not only western Philosophy but by the whole world. 
There should be a melodious harmony between both the cultures and accordingly 
we should live our life. We should have knowledge of our Dharma, our culture. 
We have religions like Hindu, Muslim, etc. but at the same time we have a 
common religion i.e.मानवधर्मः’. It indicates the core of Indian culture ‘वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् 
means ‘Other is not other, but is my divine brother.’ In the end, the Shubhashitkar 
says that despite taken the human birth, the person who does not do the good deeds, 
he/she is like a burden on this earth and is called like an animal.
